Hazard: An unstable connection can cause the water heater’s vent collar to separate or detach if pressure is applied. A detached vent collar poses a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning to the consumer.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported

Description: Navien tankless hot water heaters are white with “T-Creator” and “NAVIEN” on the front. Recalled model numbers are CR-180(A), CR-210(A), CR-240(A), CC-180(A), CC-210(A) and CC-240(A) manufactured in 2008. A label on the side of the water heater lists the model number along with the manufacturing year in YYYY format.

Sold by: Wholesale distributors to in-home installers nationwide from February 2008 through March 2009 for between $1,500 and $2,100.

Manufactured in: South Korea

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using and check the model and manufacture year information on their Navien water heater. Consumers with recalled water heaters should immediately contact Navien to schedule a free repair. Navien will replace all Nylon 66 vent collar with PVC collars. Consumers who continue use of the water heaters while awaiting repair, should have a working carbon monoxide alarm installed outside of sleeping areas in the home.

1) Get Recommendations

Start by asking your friends and family and then check in withthe National Association of the Remodeling Industry for a list of members inyour area. Another way to find good Contractors is by talking with a buildinginspector, who'll know which contractors routinely meet code requirements.

2) Do Phone Interviews

Onceyou've gotten some names, put in a call to each of your prospects. This maycull some of them out right away. Contractors are notorious for not returningphone calls. If you don’t get a return call from someone in a customary time,mark them off your list – you will save yourself grief in the long run. To theContractors you do speak to, ask the following questions:

• Do they take on projects of your size? 

• Are they willing to provide financial references, from suppliers or banks?

 • Canthey give you a list of previous clients?

 • Howmany other projects would they have going at the same time?

 • Howlong have they worked with their subcontractors?

The answers to these questions will reveal the company's availability,reliability, how much attention they'll be able to give your project and howsmoothly the work will go.

3) Meet Face to Face

Basedon the phone interviews, pick three or four contractors to meet for estimatesand further discussion. A contractor should be able to answer your questionssatisfactorily and in a manner that puts you at ease. Check in with yourstate's consumer protection agency and your local Better Business Bureau tomake sure contractors don't have a history of disputes with clients orsubcontractors.

4) Investigate the Facts

Yourlist should now be narrowed down – put your research to use and all up formerclients to find how their project went and ask to see the finished product. Don’trely on results alone. Ask to visit a current job site and see for yourself howthe contractor works. Is the job site neat and safe? Are workers courteous andcareful with the homeowner's property?

5) Make Plans, Get Bids

Youhave your short list of contractors whose track records seem clean and whosework ethic looks responsible. Now it's time to stop looking back at past workand start looking forward to your project. A conscientious contractor will shouldprovide a complete set of blueprints and also a sense of what homeowners wantout of a project and what they plan to spend. To compare bids, ask everyone tobreak down the cost of materials, labor, profit margins and other expenses.Generally materials account for 40 percent of the total cost; the rest coversoverhead and the typical profit margin, which is 15 to 20 percent.

6) Set a Payment Schedule

Paymentschedules can also speak to a contractor's financial status and work ethic. Ifthey want half the bid up front, they may have financial problems or be worriedthat you won't pay the rest after you've seen the work. For large projects, aschedule usually starts with 10 percent at contract signing, three payments of25 percent evenly spaced over the duration of the project and a check for thefinal 15 percent when you feel every item on the punch list has been completed.

7) Don't Let Price Be Your Guide

Buyerbeware! You get what you pay for! We have all heard these warnings – Heed them! Beware of your low-ball bid. The single most important factor in choosing acontractor is how well you and the contractor communicate. All things beingequal, it's better to spend more and get someone you're comfortable with.

8) Put it in Writing

Draw upa contract that details every step of the project: payment schedule; proof ofliability insurance and worker's compensation payments; a start date andprojected completion date; specific materials and products to be used; and arequirement that the contractor obtain lien releases (which protect you if hedoesn't pay his bills) from all subcontractors and suppliers. Insisting on aclear contract isn't about mistrust, it's about insuring a successfulrenovation.

Lint? Mold? Insulation?

When house-hunting, it is very important that you do your research on a home. If you can, stick your head up in the attic. Are the rafters any other color than natural wood? If the wood is painted white, the home has most likely been involved in some sort of fire. The white paint helps cover up scorch marks and also helps eliminate the smell of smoke.

Preventing Dryer Fires

The National Fire Protection Association reports approximately 14,100 fires per year that are caused by improperly venting a dryer or careless maintenance procedures.

Tips for dryer safety:

Prevent fires with proper dryer duct installation. The dryer duct should vent directly outdoors - never to a room inside the house. Venting a gas dryer inside is especially dangerous because the air discharge can contain a combination of combustible gases.

Avoid using plastic duct work because it could ignite or melt. Instead, install a hard metal duct from the dryer to the outside of the house.

Keep the duct free of lint to help reduce the chance of fire spreading outside the dryer and into the vent. Never attempt to dismantle a dryer to clean the line between the dryer drum and the heat element. Contact a professional to do that type of work.

Use dryer vents constructed of non-flexible metal that contain as few bends as possible.

Clean the lint trap after every use.

Call a professional if your dryer is not working properly.

Install a smoke detector near your laundry room.

How often should I have my chimney cleaning?

This a tougher question than it sounds. The simple answer is: The National Fire Protection Association Standard 211 says, "Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, and repairs shall be done if necessary. "This is the national safety standard and is the correct way to approach the problem. It takes into account the fact that even if you don't use your chimney much, animals may build nests in the flue or there may be other types of deterioration that could make the chimney unsafe to use.

Insect nests can be the source of a fire

The Chimney Safety Institute if America recommends that open masonry fireplaces should be cleaned at 1/4" of sooty buildup, and sooner if there is any glaze present in the system. Factory-built fireplaces should be cleaned when any appreciable buildup to cause a chimney fire capable of damaging the chimney or spreading to the home.

Cleaning your Vinyl Siding

If you are having a build-up of black or green mildew (most commonly found on the north side of the home) you can easily clean it with this mixture (see below). Purchase a soft brush and place it on a telescoping pole for easiest cleaning.

For streak-free cleaning, work from the bottom up and do 3'x3' areas and then rinse thoroughly. You are cautioned against changing the proportions of TSP and/or bleach as it can easily damage vinyl and polypropylene siding.

Hazard: The motor in the air exchangers can overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received nine reports of overheating incidents resulting in fires and property damage outside of the United States. No incidents have been reported in the United States.

Description: This recall involves air exchangers sold under different brands that are used to circulate air in and out of the home. The metal air exchangers are painted blue or grey. Air exchangers included in the recall were manufactured from 1996 through 2001 and have brand and model information printed on the unit's rating plate or on the side of the unit.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately turn off and stop using their air exchangers. Consumers should contact Venmar Ventilation to request a free inspection and repair by a Venmar field technician.

Radon in your home - News 5 Investigation and more...

We have couple of phone calls this morning after people viewed the News Channel 5 investigative report about homes with radon on last nights (2/3/2011) newscast.

We have had several inquiries to the testing that can be done for radon. We have provided that information for you here.

WAYS TO TEST FOR RADON: The two most popular methods for radon testing are Continuous Radon Monitor's (CRM's) and charcoal test kits. If you are testing the home you currently live in, you can save money by using a Do-It-Yourself charcoal test kit, available at many local hardware and home improvement stores. They are easy to use and very accurate when the instructions are followed.

If you are buying a home or building a new home, insist on using a CRM for your testing. 2Patriots Property Inspection can provide this testing at the time of your home inspection. Our test equipment provides the fastest and most accurate results available, approved by The USEPA with results in as little as 48 hours. Our Continuous Radon Monitors (CRM's) are the preferred method as they can detect tampering and provide an immediate reading of radon levels, (versus a charcoal kit - which recommends 7 days at the home and then must be mailed off for results.) Be sure to allow enough time for a radon test as part of your "Offer To Buy" so that it may be performed as part of the home inspection process. The EPA recommends that every home in America be tested for radon, but one of the best times to find out if a home has a problem is before you buy it! Call us for scheduling information and price.

Certain conditions have been established by the EPA that must be followed for charcoal and CRM's including:
Closed house conditions -

The house must have all windows and doors kept closed (except for normal entry and exit) during the entire testing period, and for at least 12 hours prior to starting the test.
The thermostat for the furnace or A/C should be set to a normal temperature. Everything remains the same except that occupants are not allowed to leave any doors or windows open.
The testing device is to be placed on the lowest livable area of the home (typically the basement unless uninhabitable) away from drafts or vents. It should be approximately 20 to 36 inches above the floor and away from outside walls, windows or doors.

CRM's are left in place for at least 48 hours and provide immediate results upon retrieval. Charcoal test kits are typically just as accurate, if not tampered with, but are exposed from 3 to 7 days (dependent upon manufacturer) and then sent to the laboratory for results. Results may take a week or two. Both methods are excellent as long as the testing conditions are followed.

Benefits of a Pre-Listing Home Inspection

With inventories in most parts of the country still pushing high levels, buyers are increasingly more sensitive to property condition and are more than ever asking for full disclosure up front about condition and other factors that affect the value.

A pre-inspected home gives the potential buyers a full inspection report by a qualified home inspector. The report we provide educates the buyers on the condition of the property under consideration, and any repairs that were made by the seller, along with any major repairs that may need to be made once they close on the house. With this report, the buyer can decide early on if they want to pursue a property, given the condition. There may be some excepted items they can live with, but others they cannot.

The same report should be used by the sellers to assist them in preparing property disclosure documents. It allows the seller to anticipate any objections directed toward property structure and system functions such as heating and air conditioning - objections that may have potential financial implications.

For marketing purposes, a pre-listing inspection should be available at the property for review by the potential buyers after viewing the property. Hazard: An electrical failure in the dishwasher's heating element can pose a serious fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received 12 reports of dishwasher heating element failures that resulted in fires and dishwasher damage, including one report of extensive kitchen damage from a fire. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recall includes Maytag(r), Amana(r), Jenn-Air(r), Admiral(r), Magic Chef(r), Performa by Maytag(r) and Crosley(r) brand dishwashers with plastic tubs and certain serial numbers. The model and serial numbers are printed on a label located inside the plastic tub on a tag near the left side of the door opening. The rebate is $150 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher models MDB7759, MDB7609 or MDBH979; or $250 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher models MDB8959, MDB8859, MDB7809 or MDB7709. The events of this past weekends rains have been tough for all Tennesseeans! Most faired better than some, but all have been touched.

I have spent the last few days on the phone, answering and returning hundreds of calls of desperation from many of our 2Patriots "family", and from some I have not known prior to talking this week. Most were looking for repair sources - and a shoulder. Some just needed to vent - though price gauging seems to be minimal, it is happening. Shame on you if you are one of them! You will be caught - one way or another.

Spring Time Maintenance (Part 2)

Made it thru the first maintenance list yet? :) Below is a list of more good maintenance checks you should make:

ATTIC

Check your attic for proper ventilation and birds nests.
Look for obstructions over vents, damaged soffit panels, roof flashing leaks and wet spots on insulation.
When you're in the attic, wear long sleeves and gloves to protect yourself from insulation.

HVAC & BATTERIES

You can change filters and clean the air purifier,but have a maintenance check of your HVAC system by a professional.
Spring is also a good time to have your ducts professionally cleaned. It'll make your indoor air quality healthier and your furnace more efficient.
Change batteries on smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

DRAINAGE

Shrubs and landscaping help against soil erosion, but should be planted to form a negative grade, which means water will flow away from the house.

CONCRETE

Seal and inspect asphalt or concrete driveways. Most of us put off sealing driveways until the fall, but the spring is an ideal time to do it, says Gibbs. The sealer you use, driveway material and climate will affect how often you need to seal your driveway.
Power wash concrete patios; inspect decks for rotting wood and secure railings. Seal both if necessary.

POOL

Have a professional service your pool.

WINDOWS & DOORS

Remove interior storm windows (old homes only) and replace screens on clean windows and doors
You can also save on utility bills by adding blinds to windows that face south and west.
Examine putty/caulk lines around exterior windows and doors; ensure weather stripping creates a good seal.

SUMP PUMP

Make sure the sump pump is operating correctly; install a battery back-up pump. The backup, another pump that floats above the original pump, will kick on when the electricity goes out. If your sump pump fails, an alarm goes off, letting you know the backup is working. A few hundred dollars will save you thousands in water damage, especially if your basement is finished.

RECALL: Simpson Dura-Vent Recalls Fireplace Dampers Due to Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Hazard

Description: This recall involves DuraTech Anchor Plates with Dampers and DuraChimney II Anchor Plates with Dampers. The products are intended for use as a starter section for chimneys in fireplace applications. The dampers allow the chimney to be closed when the fireplace is not in use. Each damper is a short sheet metal vent pipe fitted with a circular damper plate within the vent pipe, and attached to a square anchor plate. The damper plate rotates around an axis rod to control the flow of air through the vent pipe. Spring Home Maintenance (Part 1)

I know that it is a little early to be discussing Spring - but, I am feeling hopeful!

Instead of discussing a lengthy list of things to check for and to do around your home during the Spring, I will break this up in to doable tasks.

The article below comes from Consumer Reports and has great information of things you should check this Spring - especially after the Winter we have had.

Hazardous deck
Look for water stains where the deck ties to the house. Ongoing water leakage can lead to wood decay, weakening the deck structure and the house. If you have any doubt about the structural integrity of the deck, call a pro to investigate.

Rid your deck of moss and mold. Pressure washers are effective. Remember, if you see wood damage, like raised fibers, increase the distance between the spray nozzle and the decking.

CR recommends an electric pressure washer. It’s quieter and easier to store and transport than a gas-powered model (Ratings available to subscribers).
Dirty air conditioner

Disconnect electric power to the outdoor condenser on your air conditioner and clear it of leaves and debris with a vent brush, power blower, garden hose, or the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. If the cooling fins are exposed, be careful not to bend them. (If your yard has lots of trees and plants, wrap fiberglass mesh around the condenser coil to capture pollen and leaves. Replace the mesh as needed. Don't allow debris to block airflow.) Vacuum the grille and register inside the home to ensure good airflow. And change your furnace filter.

Foundation fissures

Hairline cracks in foundation walls might be the result of concrete curing or minor settling and aren't automatically cause for alarm. Mark them with tape and check them again in a few months. If they've worsened, call a structural engineer. If they're stable, fill them with an epoxy-injection system.

Check that the ground around the foundation slopes away from the house (about 1 inch per foot).

Look for pellet-shaped droppings or shed wings from termites.

Clear the area of leaves, in which rodents can nest.

Faulty garage-door opener

To check that the door is balanced, release it into the manual mode and lift it by hand. The door should lift easily and smoothly and stay open on its own about 3 feet off the ground. If it doesn't, by hire a garage-door technician to counterbalance its overhead spring . Next, set the reversing force on the opener as low as possible. Place a 2x4 board on the ground under the door, wide side down. The door should pop back up when it hits the 2x4. If it doesn't, call a garage-door pro. Test the photoelectric eyes by holding the 2x4 between them. The door should reverse direction. If it doesn’t, have it checked by a pro.

Clogged gutters

Clear gutters of debris and check them for corrosion, joint separation, and loose fasteners. Flush out downspouts and unclog leader pipes. Leaders should extend at least 5 feet to direct water away from the foundation.

Leaky roof

Leaks typically occur around an inadequately flashed chimney, skylight, or other opening. They're easiest to spot in the attic; inspect the rafters for water stains. Patching leaks is best left to a professional. While the contractor is on the roof, have him clean leaves from roof valleys.

Examine the siding under roof eaves, and the ceilings in the rooms below, for water or discoloration, indications that ice dams might have created leaks along the roof edge.

Inspect the roof for cracked, curled, or missing shingles. Asphalt shingles typically last 20 years.

Weakened trees

Inspect trees for broken branches. If the limb is high up, hire a licensed arborist. If you can reach it from the ground, take it down using the three-cut technique, which prevents bark from tearing and creating an open wound on the trunk:

Make the first cut 1 to 2 feet from the branch collar, sawing a quarter way through the bottom of the branch.

Make the second cut 3 inches farther out from the first, sawing all the way through the branch.

Make the final cut just beyond the branch collar, sawing from the top down.

Check trunks for signs of "sun scalding," which typically affects the south and the southwest sides of smooth-barked trees, such as maples. Inspect for roots poking through the soil, a possible sign that the tree is starting to list. If you had heavy snowfall in winter, look for bending branches. Make a mental note and check that they bounce back and produce leaves in the spring.

Cracked pavement

Nip cracks in the bud in the driveway and paths before weeds take up residence. Home centers sell patching materials and fillers designed for asphalt and concrete surfaces. These DIY fixes might not do the trick on surfaces that have ruptured from the effects of frost heaving. For those, you'll need to hire a professional to pour or pave a new surface over stabilized soil.

If you have a path that was dry set (as opposed to set in mortar), brush stone dust or sand in the joints to lock the pavers in place and prevent weeds from invading.

Hope this post finds each of you doing okay and without any issues from this weather that has dumped on Middle Tennessee this past weekend.

I wanted to take a moment and remind you to take the time to look around your home and property for damage to it and/or ways to prevent damage during the thaw. To some, this may be old hat. But, 2Patriots has inspected many homes over the last few years for people that have moved from areas of the country that aren't used to the snow & ice that we have experienced.

Snow and ice on the roof can melt during the day only to re-freeze again at night when the temperature falls below freezing once again. When this happens, rain gutters are prone to a condition called "ice dams" where ice builds up in the gutters, preventing water from flowing. When conditions are just right, this water blockage can cause water to work its way back up the roof line, under the shingles, causing leaks in the attic, down the walls, or through the ceiling. If possible, make sure to do a visual inspection of your gutters and your shingles. If you see evidence of raised shingles, please call a roofing professional to further investigate. You may also want to take the time to go in your attic and look for any leaks in your roof.

Snow; ice and cold temperatures are damaging to pipes as well. While many residents that live in areas with harsh winter weather insulate their pipes, ice storms can hit more temperate areas (such as the Middle Tennessee). Even homes with insulated pipes can experience burst pipes after the weather we have experienced, especially if the power has been out for extended time periods. After all, without home heating systems circulating warm air, water in the pipes could reach the freezing point. When water freezes in pipes, it expands, putting extreme pressure on pipes and pipe joints. Depending on the extent of the freeze, the water damage may not appear until everything begins to thaw out. The best way to evaluate your plumbing is to LOOK & LISTEN. Go in your crawlspace or basement to detect leaks in waterlines or joints. Look for dripping spots on the ground and listen for any running water. If you hear running water or see leak evidence, call a plumbing professional.

In addition to freezing and melt cycles, ice is exceptionally heavy. It can cause structural damages to roofs, bridges, and other structures. After the ice storm, ice from above can fall off in chunks causing injuries to pedestrians below.

If ice/snow has covered your bathroom fan vent, go in the bathroom and turn on the fan until you can see the vent on the roof (disregard if your vent fans at the eaves.) This may take anywhere from 10 - 60 minutes depending on the outside temperature and how much snow/ice is on the vent.

Dry Air of Winter

The cold air has set in and brought Tennessee in to a deep freeze, AND dry air. While dry air isn't a bad thing in the great out-of-doors, it can be difficult to live with inside your home. Purchasing a humidifier keeps the air in your home from getting too dry during those frosty months of the year.

When you begin to research humidifier options you will find that two types exist: portable ones and permanent ones. Both types of units work efficiently, but are designed to solve different problems. Portable units are good to use when one area in your house needs more moisture. You can use this unit anywhere in your home, as long as you have some sort of flat surface to set it on. And you can move it from room to room, if you so desire. If your whole house needs humidity, however, install a permanent humidifier. This unit attaches to the ductwork of a forced-air furnace. When your hot air is forced through the ducts, moisture goes along with it.

Purchase an indoor thermometer with hygrometer to measure the level of humidity in your home. Excess humidity causes bacteria, mold and mildew issues. To avoid these situations, keep a level of 40 to 50 percent humidity. This provides a comfortable environment for most people.

Don't forget to do regular cleaning and maintenance on the humidifier. Check your instructions for manufacturer's suggestions for maintaining the equipment to prevent bacteria and mildew.

You want your home to feel comfortable all year long. Your heating and cooling system allows you to live in just the right air temperature. A humidifier will allow you to live with just the right amount of moisture in your home and prevent dry, cold weather from taking over.

Description: This recall involves the one-inch 140X-9 Temperature and Pressure Relief valves, which are typically used in large water heaters for commercial buildings or possibly for large homes. The valves bear item codes 0259844 (75 psi/210°F); 0259924 (100 psi/210°F); 0259708 (150 psi/210°F); 0259925 (125 psi/210°F); and 0259930 (150 psi/210°F). The affected date codes are 0641R through 0930R. The date code is printed after the model number “M15” on a green metal tag fastened to the pressure relief valve.

Sold by: Authorized distributors nationwide from October 2006 through July 2009 for between $250 and $280. The valves were typically sold as replacement parts for large water heaters used in commercial locations or possibly large homes.

RECALL: Window Covering Safety Council Recalls to Repair All Roman and Roll-Up Blinds Due to Risk of Strangulation

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) are announcing today a voluntary recall to repair all Roman shades and roll-up blinds to prevent the risk of strangulation to young children. This recall involves millions of Roman and roll-up blinds. About five million Roman shades and about three million roll-up blinds are sold each year.

CPSC has received reports of five deaths and 16 near strangulations, since 2006, in Roman shades and three deaths, since 2001, in roll-up blinds. Strangulations in Roman shades can occur when a child places his/her neck between the exposed inner cord and the fabric on the backside of the blind or when a child pulls the cord out and wraps it around his/her neck. Strangulations in roll-up blinds can occur if the lifting loop slides off the side of the blind and a child’s neck becomes entangled on the free-standing loop or if a child places his/her neck between the lifting loop and the roll-up blind material.

“Over the past 15 years, CPSC has been investigating window covering hazards and working with the WCSC to ensure the safety of window coverings. We commend the WCSC for providing consumers with repair kits that make window coverings safer and look forward to future steps to eliminate these hazards,” said Inez Tenenbaum, CPSC Chairman.

Over the years, CPSC has been investigating deaths associated with different types of window coverings and has worked with the WCSC to address the hazards posed by them. In 1994 and in 2000, CPSC and WCSC announced recalls to repair horizontal blinds to prevent strangulation hazards posed by pull cord and inner cord loops. As a result of CPSC investigations, the industry has modified its products and provides free repair kits for existing horizontal blinds and other window coverings. In October 2009, CPSC issued a new safety alert to warn parents about the dangers associated with window coverings.

Consumers that have Roman or roll-up shades in their homes should contact the WCSC immediately at www.windowcoverings.org or by calling (800) 506-4636 anytime to receive a free repair kit.

To help prevent child strangulation in window coverings, CPSC and the WCSC urge parents and caregivers to follow these guidelines:

Examine all shades and blinds in the home. Make sure there are no accessible cords on the front, side, or back of the product. CPSC and the WCSC recommend the use of cordless window coverings in all homes where children live or visit.

Do not place cribs, beds, and furniture close to the windows because children can climb on them and gain access to the cords.

Make loose cords inaccessible.

If the window shade has looped bead chains or nylon cords, install tension devices to keep the cord taut.

Tips to Make Your Holiday a Safe One! (from the CPC)

Trees:

• When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label "Fire Resistant." Although this label does not mean the tree won't catch fire, it does indicate the tree will resist burning and should extinguish quickly.

• When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt of a fresh tree is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.

• When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces and radiators. Because heated rooms dry live trees out rapidly, be sure to keep the stand filled with water. Place the tree out of the way of traffic and do not block doorways.

Lights:
• Indoors or outside, use only lights that have been tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory, which indicates conformance with safety standards. Use only lights that have fused plugs.

• Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections, and throw out damaged sets. Always replace burned-out bulbs promptly with the same wattage bulbs.

• Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per single extension cord. Make sure the extension cord is rated for the intended use.

• Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted.

• Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use.

• Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, house walls, or other firm supports to protect the lights from wind damage. Use only insulated staples to hold strings in place, not nails or tacks. Or, run strings of lights through hooks (available at hardware stores).

• Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

• For added electric shock protection, plug outdoor electric lights and decorations into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). Portable outdoor GFCIs can be purchased where electrical supplies are sold. GFCIs can be installed permanently to household circuits by a qualified electrician.

Decorations:
• Use only non-combustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree. Choose tinsel or artificial icicles of plastic or nonleaded metals. Leaded materials are hazardous if ingested by children.

• Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens. Always use non-flammable holders, and place candles where they will not be knocked down.

• In homes with small children, take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable, keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children to avoid the child swallowing or inhaling small pieces, and avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food that may tempt a child to eat them.

• Wear gloves to avoid eye and skin irritation while decorating with spun glass "angel hair." Follow container directions carefully to avoid lung irritation while decorating with artificial snow sprays.

Fireplaces:
• Use care with "fire salts," which produce colored flames when thrown on wood fires. They contain heavy metals that can cause intense gastrointestinal irritation and vomiting if eaten. Keep them away from children.

Manufacturer: Electrolux Home Products Inc., of Augusta, Ga.

Hazard: An incorrect part allows more fuel to pass to the range’s oven than can be burned efficiently, causing incomplete combustion and the release of carbon monoxide. This poses a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Electrolux has received four reports of incidents involving carbon monoxide being released from the recalled gas range. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The following Electrolux ICON and Kenmore PRO 30” free-standing gas range model and serial numbers are included in this recall. For Electrolux ICON, the model and serial numbers are located on the back of the range. For the Kenmore PRO, the model and serial numbers are located near the base of the range just below the bottom right portion of the oven door and also on the back of the range. Not all serial numbers within these ranges are included in the recall.

Gas Lighter Bars and Gas Log Maintenance

Those handy gas starter pipes start a fire quickly, but they deteriorate over time and need to be replaced (as do their gas mixing valves). Look for excessive rust scaling, cracks, stripped threads on the joints or blocked gas outlet holes. Many fireplace/heating supply stores carry them or can order them for you. Be sure to get the proper natural gas or propane mixing valve.

Gas logs should be serviced annually (we suggest your dealer) to help assure proper performance. Over time, the materials that help create the realistic gas flame will become worn and dirty, and replacing the embers and sand/vermiculite will help your log set perform and look like new. Consult your Owners Manual to determine the correct type of material to use and how it should be applied.

Do not substitute materials or attempt to make alterations to your gas log set; doing so may cause dangerous conditions. Some helpful items to renew the realism of your fireplace include soot remover spray, replacement "glowing ember" lava rocks and rock wool mixture to replace the original material that came with your gas log set.

To aid in the prevention of chimney fires and carbon monoxide intrusion and to help keep heating appliances and fireplaces functioning properly, the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) offers the following safety tips:

1. Get an annual chimney check. Have chimneys inspected annually, and cleaned as necessary, by a qualified professional chimney service technician. This reduces the risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisonings due to creosote buildup or obstructions in the chimneys.

2. Keep it clear. Keep tree branches and leaves at least 15 feet away from the top of the chimney.

3. Install a chimney cap to keep debris and animals out of the chimney.

4. Choose the right fuel. For burning firewood in wood stoves or fireplaces, choose wellseasoned wood that has been split for a minimum of six months - one year and stored in a covered and elevated location. Never burn Christmas trees or treated wood in your fireplace or wood stove.

5. Build it right. Place firewood or firelogs at the rear of the fireplace on a supporting grate. To start the fire, use kindling or a commercial firelighter. Never use flammable liquids.

6. Keep the hearth area clear. Combustible material too close to the fireplace, or to a wood stove, could easily catch fire. Keep furniture at least 36” away from the hearth.

7. Use a fireplace screen. Use metal mesh or a screen in front of the fireplace to catch flying sparks that could ignite or burn holes in the carpet or flooring.

8. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Place detectors throughout the house and check batteries in the spring and fall. When you change your clocks for Daylight Savings Time, remember to check your batteries.

9. Never leave a fire unattended. Before turning in for the evening, be sure that the fire is fully extinguished. Supervise children and pets closely around wood stoves and fireplaces.

10. The CSIA recommends annual inspections performed by CSIA Certified Chimney Sweeps. These chimney sweeps have earned the industry's most respected credential by passing an intensive examination based on fire codes, clearances and standards for the construction and maintenance of chimney and venting systems. The National Fire Protection Association also recommends that all chimneys are inspected on an annual basis.

Have Your Heating Units Checked Now

No matter how you heat your home during the cold months, you need to have your heating unit checked out by your HVAC technician to make sure it is working properly.

If you use a kerosene heater for backup heat, make sure you have kerosene on hand and make sure the heater is in good working order with no leaks. If your kerosene heater is leaking it can cause a fire. It would be best to buy a new one if there is a leak.

By performing these routine maintenance measures now, you can prevent possible problems later on during the cold months. If you have to have repair work done during the colder weather, it could be more costly than having the maintenance work done now.

How to replace a faucet aerator (reprinted from AcmeHowTo.com)

Caution: Please read our safety information at the bottom of this post before attempting any testing, maintenance or repairs.

A faucet that has weak water pressure for both hot and cold water may just need the aerator cleaned. Another symptom of a dirty aerator is an irregular spray pattern or a stray stream of water going off at an odd direction. Cleaning or replacing the aerator is very easy and you might be able to do it without any tools.

First of all, close the drain so you don't lose any parts. You don't need to turn off the water supply for this repair. The aerator is the assembly and screen water passes through as it leaves the spout. This part at the tip of the spout unscrews in a clockwise direction (righty tighty, lefty loosey). Dry both the spout and your hands before trying to remove it with your fingers. If it is too tight, then you are going to need to use adjustable pliers. Before using the pliers on the faucet, wrap several loops of masking tape or a rubber band around the aerator to reduce the risk of marring the finish.

Once you remove the aerator you will notice one or more parts contained within. Note the order and orientation of the parts as you remove them. As you take them out you will probably find grit and rust. Rinse the pieces with water and brush off the debris. For difficult to remove deposits, soak the parts in white vinegar for a few minutes and scrub with a toothbrush. If any parts are cracked or broken, replace them. If the washer has hardened, it should replaced.

With the debris cleaned out, reassemble the aerator and screw it back onto the faucet. Hand tightening should be adequate. If water leaks around the threads, give it a fraction of a turn with the pliers and then remove the masking tape.

That's it, you're done.

Serious injury can result from sharp edges. When reaching into a service area, cabinet or housing there may be sharp edges. Use caution when reaching into something.

- Look for cracks and holes in house siding or paint. Replace caulk if necessary.

- Good time to paint interior rooms or shampoo/replace carpets while it's still warm enough to leave windows open.

- In cold-climate areas, remove window air-conditioners, or put weatherproof covers on them.

- Check heating system including filters, pilot lights, and burners, and have the system serviced by a qualified professional.

- Drain hot water heater. Flush and refill.

- Clean and vacuum dust from vents, baseboard heaters and cold-air returns.

- Check that foundations are properly graded. Soil should slope four to six inches for a distance of three feet out from the foundation walls.

- If you haven't already, check basement for cracks or leaks. Seal if necessary.

- If you have a sump pump, test, clean and lubricate.

- Wash out garbage cans, disinfect, and then rinse thoroughly.
